December 21, 2012–Will The Sun Stop Shining?

December 22, 2011

Can’t talk about the day the sun stops shining without mentioning the Mayan Calendar which is supposed to end December 21, 2012. So what’s it all about and why is it so fascinating?

The Maya calendar was adopted by the other Mesoamerican nations, such as the Aztecs and the Toltec, which adopted the mechanics of the calendar unaltered but changed the names of the days of the week and the months.

The Maya calendar uses three different dating systems in parallel, the Long Count, the Tzolkin (divine calendar), and the Haab (civil calendar). Of these, only the Haab has a direct relationship to the length of the year.

The Mayans used their calendar to read the stars, plan their crops, and tied it all in with their mythology. What has captured the attention of many with this ancient calendar centers on prophetic events that are to take place, the alignment of planets, and even cataclysms heralding the end of the world.

Do you think December 21, 2012 will be the day the sun stops shining? Or do you have a different version of what could happen next year?

Talk to me, people 🙂 Share your ideas and answers–oh, and don’t forget to come by next week on December 26 when I officially kick off The Day The Sun Stopped Shining Blog Tour along with a cohort of AMAZING fantasy, horror, and paranormal authors.
